President’s Message – Terrye Zaremba

It’s been six months since the election of the new Board of Directors in May of 2009.  The following comprise this Board:

President – Terrye Zaremba                Two-year Trustee – Jim Powell

Vice President – Curtis Walker          One-year Trustee – Pat McKnett

Secretary – Chris Rogers                    Director – Doug Crow

Treasurer – Charlie Anderson             Director – Chris Savage

This newsletter is being sent to inform Calvert Beach residents what CBCA has accomplished since the last Newsletter in April, 2009.  All residents are welcome to attend our monthly Board meetings held on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 PM at the Long Beach Community Center.

Community

Family Fun Day -  About 50 residents attended this event, which was sponsored by CBCA. Thanks to many who brought food, drink and grills.  Thanks to Chris Bauerdorf for leading the Treasure Hunt and to Dr. Stephen Godfrey from the Calvert Marine Museum for bringing fossils and explaining their origins and how to find them.  Everyone enjoyed a sunny day on the beach and in the water.

National Night Out – About 200 people enjoyed this yearly event, which occurred on August 4th (almost the hottest day of the year). Again, the dunk tank was a big favorite.  This event is co-sponsored by LBCA and is attended by the local and state police and fire/rescue squads.  Many thanks to the chairperson, Mary Lee Kolich for a great job!

Boat Ramp and Parking Lot – The lock on the boat ramp gate was changed in August, 2009.  Please contact Charlie Anderson if you need a key. New signs were placed in the parking lot indicating where vehicles with trailers and those without should park (thanks to Jim Powell).

All vehicles in the lot must have a parking permit displayed; two permits are issued when dues are paid.  A+ towing will issue a warning for the first offense.  A second offense will result in towing.

Maintenance- Green Thumbs Lawn Care is still maintaining the grounds at the boat ramp/parking lot and Mike’s Works LLC is still providing care and maintenance of the landscaping at the sign at Calvert Beach and Long Beach Roads; many thanks to both. Thanks also to Doug Crow who power washed the stairs at Avenue D and to Dale Middleton who then stained them.  The stain was donated by Gerry Strake, owner of Benjamin Moore store in Prince Frederick and the McCormick Paint stores in Dunkirk and Lusby.

Security

Community Watch – Charlie Bauerdorf has been attending these meetings for several years, but cannot do this anymore.  CBCA would appreciate another volunteer.  Many thanks to Charlie for his community support.

Community Action Team (CAT) - This team has been assembled by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office to assist with community-based policing efforts.  Their role is to be out in the community and be visible in order to act as a crime deterrent and to communicate with CBCA and other organizations and community members to find out what kind of problems exist, where the problem areas are and to determine who may be responsible. If asked, they will also visit homes and do a security inspection.

If you have a non-emergency problem to discuss with the CAT  team, please call (410) 586-1027.  However, if there is an immediate problem call (410) 535-1400 for the Sheriff or (410) 535-2800 for State Police (or, of course 911).

Security Patrols – CBCA, LBCA and Flag Harbor are paying for security patrols of the beach and surrounding areas.  These take place from May through October.  They send reports of these activities every two weeks.

Neighborhood Watch – Anyone interested in this can take a two hour training program with the County Police.  Please call Candice D‘Agostino at (410) 535-3733.

Mosquito Control

This program will start again after Memorial Day 2010.  Spraying is based on actual adult mosquito population counts obtained at monitoring stations.  The cost is a bargain as the county pays half of the expenses. Pat McKnett has been in charge of this for quite a few years and would appreciate another community member taking this over.  Thanks to Pat for her efforts over the years.
