President’s Message – Terrye Zaremba

Nearly a year has passed since the election of the current Board of Directors in May, 2009.  Election of a new Board will take place at the ANNUAL MEETING ON MAY 23 AT 2PM at the Long Beach Community Center.  The proposed slate is as follows:

President – Doug Crow                      2-year Trustee – Terrye Zaremba

Vice President – Chris Savage            1-year Trustee – Maria Buehler

Secretary – Vacant                              Director – Jim Powell

Treasurer – Charlie Anderson             Director – Vacant

I am stepping down after 2 years as President.  Doug Crow has accepted this nomination and, if elected, will be an excellent president.  I thank Chris Rogers for her outstanding job as secretary (we will miss you greatly!).  I also thank Pat McKnett for serving for quite a few years as Trustee and Director – thanks Pat!  However, she will continue to deal with the Mosquito program.  Thanks also to Charlie Bauerdorf who attended the Neighborhood Watch Meetings last year. Note that we can use some volunteers for the 2 vacant Board positions.  All residents who have paid their dues are eligible to vote and to run for office; nominations will be taken from those attending.

This newsletter is being sent to inform Calvert Beach residents of what CBCA has accomplished since the last newsletter in November, 2009, along with items of interest to the community.  All residents are welcome to attend our monthly Board meetings held on the third Monday of each month at 7PM at the LBCA Civic Center.

Please note that we have included some advertising in this issue.  We encourage you to patronize these local businesses.

Community

Security: CBCA, LBCA and Flag Harbor Marina are again paying for security patrols of the community.  They issue reports of their activities and seem to be getting to know some of the troublemakers. A number of arrests have been made for underage drinking, drug possession, trespassing and vandalism.  We are going to continue the patrols, but they have asked for an increase in their hourly rate.  Because of this, CBCA has to increase the dues by $5.  Actually the dues have remained at $30 with $10 for security for several years, but now we need to charge $45 ($30 + $15) (See PAYMENT OF DUES).

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office has also assembled a Community Action Team (CAT) to assist with community-based policing efforts in order to act as a crime deterrent and to gain a better understanding of the communities they serve. If requested, they will also visit homes and local businesses to perform a security inspection.  For further information, contact the Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with a CAT team member at (410) 535-2800.  This and other updates from the CAT Team are also available on Facebook.

Beach and Cliff Erosion:  Although this has been a continuing problem, it has been particularly bad this past winter with a lot of rain, snow and high winds.  Large areas of the cliffs in Calvert County have been eroded.  A Town Hall Meeting, organized by Representative Tony O’Donnell, was held on February 20 in St. Leonard.  About 250 residents attended along with a panel of experts in government and professional capacities.  A number of possible solutions to help mitigate the erosion were offered including revetments, breakwaters and jetties, depending on the situation.  Complicating the problem is the presence of the Puritan Tiger Beetle, which is an endangered species.  In addition, since much of the waterfront is private property, it is not clear if help from the state or county can be obtained.  Possibly private granting agencies or establishment of a Tax District could help.

The stair at Avenue D was badly damaged during the winter.  The cause of the damage may have been caused by an unusually large amount of groundwater from all of the rain and snow. This groundwater caused the face of the cliff to collapse damaging the supports for the stair.  High, rough tides also did not help.

After reviewing three bids, a marine contractor, Ward’s Construction, Inc., was accepted.   The cost of $6,750 was also the most reasonable bid, but, unfortunately is almost the entire amount in our treasury!   The good news is that a number of homeowners have offered to make donations above and beyond the $45 for the dues and security to help defray some of the cost.

See PAYMENT OF DUES form to give a donation (thank you).

Boat Ramp and Parking:  We are again issuing parking permits when dues are paid.  A+ Towing has agreed to tow cars not displaying a permit after issuing a warning for the first offense.  If you do not have a key to the parking lot, please call Charlie Anderson at (410) 586-3090.  Keys are $10, but if you lose a key, it is $50.  Travis Thorne of Green Thumb Lawn Care has again agreed to mow the parking lot.  Thanks, Travis.  We are planning to add some stone to the parking lot and to rearrange rocks that have migrated from the boat ramp to shore it up further.

The picnic tables have been chained together on the grassy area next to the beach.  This is to prevent their being washed into the bay when high tides and storms hit the beach (thanks to Tina Murphy and Steve Kelly for their work).  However, if there is a reason, they can be moved to the beach for a gathering.

Mosquito Control: This program will start again after Memorial Day 2010.  Spraying is based on actual adult mosquito population counts obtained at monitoring stations.  Pat McKnett has kindly volunteered to be in charge of this (thanks, Pat).  If you do not want spraying ,please call Pat at (410) 586-0572.

Landscaping: Mike’s Works LLC has been maintaining the landscaping at the sign at the intersection of Calvert Beach and Long Beach Roads.  Thanks for your continuing good job, Mike.

Upcoming Events

Beach Clean-up:  On Saturday, May 15 at 10:00 CBCA will have a beach cleanup day.  This will be similar to those in the past where we pickup everything that doesn’t belong on the beach and take it to the landfill.  This year, we will also paint the gate at the boat ramp since it has been rusting over the years.  Paint and supplies will be furnished by CBCA.

In addition to volunteers to help with the cleaning, we could use someone with a pickup truck who is willing to take the trash to the landfill.  Please call Charlie Anderson at (410) 586-3090 if you can provide the truck.

Family Fun Day:  Last year we had a great turn out for this event.  This year it will be on June 26th at the boat ramp at 12:00 noon.  Fun, food, games, etc.  We could use some volunteers to help.  Call Terrye at (410) 586-3839

.National Night Out:  About 200 people enjoyed this event last August.  It will be held this year on August 3 (probably again the hottest night of the year!).  The dunk tank is always popular.  Mary Lee Kolich is the chairperson.

PAYMENT OF DUES

Included in this newsletter (on the back of the first page) is an invoice for 2010 dues.  The dues are now $45 ($30 dues + $15 security).  The invoice also contains a line to make it convenient for you to make a special donation to the Avenue D stair repair as well.  Please note that CBCA is not a 501(c)3 corporation and, therefore, DONATIONS ARE NOT TAX DEDUCTABLE.

New Parking Permits will be issued when dues are paid.  Please display them on the dashboard of your vehicle(s).

We on the board are volunteers and would appreciate more help from the community!!! Hope to see you at the Annual Meeting on May 23rd.
