COMMITTEES:
Roads
and Drainage - Nothing new was reported.
Community
Watch - Charlie
Bauerdorf reported on several items discussed at the Community Watch
meeting. Mr. Guffie Smith gave a
presentation on mentoring young people as a way to deter crime. Also, discussed was that cybercrime is on the
increase. Particular mention was made of
a new product (123Spoof.com) which is being used to disguise/change incoming
caller ID numbers.
Boat
Ramp Keys - Discussed under "new
business".
Beach
Erosion - Terrye
Zaremba was interviewed for an article on beach erosion published in The
Washington Post (see www.washingtonpost.com archives for March 19, 2009
"Eco-Bills Come Due at Bay Beaches").
The board and meeting participants discussed various options currently
available to prevent erosion.
OLD
BUSINESS:
Beaches
Water Co. - Terrye
noted that the water company is seeking an easement on the edge of Flag Ponds
to install/relocate their water pumping station. Local reaction so far is positive.
Community
Watch Teams - At a
previous board meeting, Charlie said that the Community Watch group discussed
the idea of forming block teams to assist in community watch programs. Charlie reported today that no further
decisions were made at the last Community Watch meeting. While the original idea was to have a
"captain" for each block, it may not be feasible to do this in larger
communities (such as Calvert Beach) and may only be needed in problem
areas. Charlie will keep CBCA advised of
any future developments.
Beach
Prisms - Connected
with the topic of beach erosion, Terrye presented information on the subject of
beach prisms. Beach prisms are concrete
barriers that are set up to break the energy of incoming waves approaching the
shore. Some Calvert Beach waterfront
property owners may be considering installing prisms along the shoreline near
their homes. Detailed information about
beach prisms is available at
www.beachprisms.com.
NEW
BUSINESS;
Treasure
Hunt/Family Day -
Dr. Stephen Godfrey, Curator of Paleontology at the Calvert Marine Museum, has
agreed to give a presentation on fossils at this upcoming event. Terrye will email board members and ask for
their input to finalize the date for this event. A flyer on the Treasure Hunt/Family Day will
be included in the spring newsletter. It
will include the date/time, events included, and also request volunteers to
bring food/drink items and to lead activities.
Chris Rogers volunteered to make the flyer.
Towing
Co. Sign - The
board voted to have E and R automotive make a 12" x 24" sign showing
the information needed for retrieving towed vehicles. The sign will be posted outside the gate at
the boat ramp.
Damage
at Boat Ramp -
Charlie Anderson described recent damage at the boat ramp and other repairs
that need to be made (e.g., tear in the chain link fence, part of the gate is
rusted). Steve Kelly and Charlie
volunteered to take a look at the situation and make whatever repairs they
could.
Parking
Cards & New Keys
- It was agreed that cards are more cost
effective than stickers, and that the color and date on the card would change
each year. Upon payment of dues, two
parking cards will be mailed to the property owner. Charlie volunteered to make the parking card
and Chris volunteered to mail them out (coordinating with Dale Middleton who
collects the dues). As before, keys will
be picked up, not mailed. Terrye will
touch bases with Jim Powell about the new parking lot sign.
Lighting
at Ave D Stair -
SMECO is amenable to putting up a light pole at this location, and has asked
for the CBCA tax ID number. Members were
uncertain if CBCA has an ID number; Terrye will look into it.
Spring
Newsletter - Terrye
and Charlie are putting together the newsletter. Pat McKnett asked that it include information
about annual mosquito spraying (same as last year). A suggestion was made that the newsletter
include a survey soliciting community input as to the best time/day of the week
to hold CBCA meetings. It was decided
that the upcoming Annual Meeting would take place on May 17th at
2PM.
Other
- Charlie noted
that the Community Bulletin Board sign is crooked and asked for input on making
repairs. Also, Terrye asked for
nominating committee volunteers who will form a slate of candidates for the
upcoming CBCA board member elections.
Charlie volunteered and said he would seek an additional community
member to participate on the committee.
NEXT
MEETING: Sunday April 19, 2009 at 10:30 AM at the LBCA
Community Center.
